Indiscriminate \u00a0disposal of solar panels after its use ( the current panels life span is about 5 years. The different solar cells and panels that are currently in use and the trace elements present in them are listed below (IRENA, 2016). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>c-Si pv panels:&nbsp; 8% Al, 0.1 % Ag, and Pb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CIGS panels: 10 % Cu,\n28% In, 10 % Ga, 52 % Ce<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cd Te panels:&nbsp; Ni, Zn, Sn&nbsp;\n&gt; 0.26% <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides these elements,\none of the challenges faced by recycling of solar panels is removal of ethylene\nvinyl-acetate (encapsulant material). The recovery potential of all elements\nhere is very low and even if one exists it is highly energy intensive (emitting\nlarge amount of CO<sub>2<\/sub>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, while solar pv generated\nelectricity is christened as \u201crenewable\u201d and low carbon emitting energy source,\nwhat is renewable here and how is this source environmentally friendly. No\ndoubt the Sun Energy is renewable and low carbon emitter but not the media that\nconverts this energy to electricity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the year 2020, 78\nmillion of pv panel waste will be generated globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of finding a\nsolution for escalating global temperature this renewable energy source is\ncausing increase in atmospheric temperature. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Besides CO2 emissions during its life cycle, the solar cells and panels contain considerable amounts of trace elements that are not environmentally friendly.
